Hi, I just listened to your program from 6/2/09.
You mentioned the Melbourne's recent record of 3 days in a row over 110degF as if it was an Australian record. I've noticed this meme being repeated in various places. It was a record for Melbourne only - a coastal city. In other places it gets a lot hotter for a lot longer. A series of records are being set across southern Australia at the moment (the heat wave continues). And a bunch were set during the height of last summer also (including 15 days in a row above 100degF in Adelaide the capital of South Australia).
Also, the State of Tasmania recorded it's highest temperature ever last Thursday - 40.6 deg C
There is a handy summary of the current heatwave from the Australian Bureau of Meteorology here http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/current/statements/scs17.pdf
Australia's most consistently hot place is Port Hedland in Western Australia - http://www.bom.gov.au/weather/wa/port_hedland/climate.shtml
But having a tropical influence on its climate it has not been setting records recently.

Craig Allen
