Climate Change Censorship

Censorship2.gif

Earthbeat looks at how Congress has turned up the heat on climate change censorship. Recent hearings in both the House and Senate examined the Bush Administration's attempts to silence and suppress climate scientists from talking about global warming. Scientists say the administration buried reports about global warming and blocked access to key scientists.

Host Daphne Wysham speaks to one of the silenced scientists, Tom Knutson, a research meterologist at NOAA's Climate Dynamics and Prediction Group in Princeton, New Jersey. Michael Halpern of the Union of Concerned Scientists joins us in the WPFW studios to discuss a recent survey of government scientists in which the Union and the Government Accountability Project found for than half experience some type of censorship.

In addition to silencing scientists, the White House has undercut the yearly National Climate Assessment Project. Rick Piltz, the director of Climate Science Watch joins us to discuss the importance of the Assessment. Tom Devine of the Government Accountability Project then speaks about the crucial whistleblower protection act that's moving through Congress.

And finally, with one Senator's point of view is Heather Zichal. She's in charge of environmental programs for Democratic Senator John Kerry.
